Switches for Toys
The Centre has developed an assessment service and lending library for adapted toys and switches for children.
Toys such as bubble machines, Nerf guns, soft toys, remote controlled toys and most mainstream toys can be simply adapted with a variety of switches to enable many children with limited movement to operate them. The toys encourage movement, give a learning experience, and teach children about cause and effect, thereby stimulating the child’s development.
Following a discussion with yourself and/or the referring professional, an appointment will be made for you at the Centre. Before the Assessment is booked it will have to be authorized by an Occupational Therapist to ensure we have the correct equipment for the day of the Assessment. There is no charge for this Assessment.
What an Assessment consists of?
An Occupational Therapist will complete a brief interview first asking details about your child’s medical condition or disability and how this affects them. They will then take you to the technology department where your child can try out various adapted toys with different switches to identify the most suitable switch for your child.
After an Assessment?
Following your assessment you will receive advice and information on different toys and switches. Certain switches can be purchased through ourselves, alternatively the therapist will inform you where they can be purchased from or refer you to specialised technology centres. Our lending library enables your child to borrow a switch and adapted toy to play with at home for a couple of weeks. We are also able to adapt your own toys for switch access for a small donation.
